About The Area:
Commonly referred to as Vermont's West Coast, the Burlington Area is located in the
northwest portion of the state,
approximately 40 miles from the Canadian Border. Burlington is
Vermont's largest city, and Lake Champlain is one of this nation's
largest lakes - 120 miles long and covering 435 square miles to be
exact. It is, without question, a magnificent summer playground
offering not only shear beauty, but every conceivable recreational
activity and water sport one could hope for. Enjoy! Video

Burlington:
Whoever coined the phrase,
"Location, location, location," must have been thinking of
Burlington. With Lake Champlain as its front porch and the Adirondack
Mountains spread beyond that, Vermont's largest city could hardly have
a more scenic locale [See
Burlington Area Photo Gallery]. Four colleges and the University of Vermont
contribute an influx of lively young people to a busy commercial,
financial and cultural center.
Visiting
Waterfront Park is a must!
Watch the sailboats and ferries cruise
the lake. The Community Boathouse is a great source of information (802-865-3377).
It offers boat rentals and boarding for the
tour boat Ethan Allen II, a snack bar, several fishing charters, and
more. It's a great starting point to walk, skate, bike, or access the Burlington
Bike Path. You'll find public beaches at
North Beach, Leddy Park, and Oakledge Park. These
facilities are All
Operated By The Burlington Department of Parks & Recreation.
You should also consider parking the car and taking a round_trip on
The Lake Champlain
Ferries. The dock is a short walk from Waterfront Park.
To shop or eat, head to Church Street Marketplace, a four block
outdoor pedestrian mall with more than 100 shops and a variety of
restaurants and outdoor cafes. Both the waterfront and Church Street serve as
settings for Seasonal
Events such as
the Discover Jazz Festival in early June, the Independence Day
Celebration, and a great First Night celebration to welcome in the New
Year.
The
arts thrive in Burlington! In addition to the University of Vermont's
Royal Tyler Theater, which offers a variety of topnotch attractions,
the Flynn Theater downtown presents performances including Broadway
musicals, major stars, and a series of Vermont Symphony Orchestra
concerts. The city offers countless venues for Vermont's professional crafts people as well as for film festivals, literature
and poetry readings, not to mention more than 20 art galleries. And
don't forget places of interest such as
the Fleming Museum on the UVM Campus, the Ethan Allen Homestead in
Winooski, and the Shelburne Museum in neighboring Shelburne.
However,
the bottom line is that Lake Champlain is the chief attraction for
visitors for all it has to offer. It is also a source of
scientific and historical interest. Markers have long pointed out the
sites of two Historic
Shipwrecks [Diving
Guidelines]. And in 1997, a
54-foot Gunboat commanded by Benedict Arnold during the Revolutionary
War was discovered in an excellent state of preservation sitting
upright on the bottom, its mast still standing over fifty feet high
and its large bow cannon still in place. A find not ignored by the
national media! All
Shipwrecks
And just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water . . .
there is the legend of Champ, Lake Champlain's lovable monster,
reported (but not documented to the satisfaction of those wet-blanket
scientists) to inhabit its depths.
The vacationer will find an endless variety of
Lodging and Dining
establishments to choose from; a likewise variety of Camping
Facilities, including those within Vermont's magnificent State
Parks.
Be sure to also check out The
Lake Champlain Islands!
Winter
in the Burlington Area? The city is pretty much left to those who live
and work here, as well as to the thousands of college students who
call this their home away from home. It's not boring by any standards,
quite the contrary. There are a wealth of cultural events during the
entire winter season. Holiday time is second to none in Vermont!
Shopping is a delight. The Ski
Areas are a short drive away, and the city's First Night
Celebration is not to be missed. And if you are an iceboat enthusiast,
this is the place. Oh, and dress warm!
