Mountain & Recreational Biking In Vermont

Bicycling Icon Bicycling is a great way to enjoy Vermont during the warmer months, but the visitor will find cycling here quite different from back home and should prepare ahead. Touring and Mountain Biking are the most popular forms of biking in Vermont, but are not for the faint-of-heart or the ill-equipped. There are also Recreational Bike Paths for those of us who prefer peddling along a shoreline or on flatter terrain. And, of course, there are a number of bike touring companies offering specific tours and inn-to-inn cycling.

Our famed Green Mountain National Forest offers Mountain Biking for every level of cyclist, be you a beginner or world-class. There are U.S. Forest Service Roads [Dirt Roads] that gently wind through the National Forest. Off-Road Mountain Biking Trails, and Gap Roads [Paved Roads] for the hearty and more experienced. The Gap Roads cross through the GMNF east and west. We recommend that you don't try the Gap Roads your first time out! Please note that under no circumstances are you permitted to bicycle on the Hiking Trails within the National Forest.

Tip: If you are anywhere between Manchester and Rutland in the Southern part of the state, the 14 mile Forest Road #10 which cuts directly through the GMNF between Danby and Landgrove makes for a beautiful ride without the need having a paramedic as a companion [Dirt Road - Cars Permitted]. There is a small picnic area on the Danby side with a spectacular river gorge just below it, and views of the mountains from your table!

You can obtain a detailed map of these Forest Roads from the Green Mountain National Forest Ranger District Office covering the area of interest to you.

Vermont's legendary North East Kingdom provides totally different biking opportunities. Excluding Freeways and Arterial Highways, the Northeast Kingdom has just under 2300 miles of  ideal biking roads. 1,501 of  the roads in the Kingdom are unpaved; some may even give mountain bikers a challenge.

Recreational Bike Paths:

Lake Champlain Area Bicycling: Over 1100 miles of routes thru 2 states and 2 countries!

Lake Champlain Region Road Maps & Guidebooks: Information for cyclists.

Stowe Recreational Path: 5.5 Miles, map and info.
