Instructions:
[Estimated
Mileage: 64.2 Miles]
This drive begins by exiting Route I-89 -
Waterbury/Stowe Exit. This Exit can be reached whether you are coming
from the East [e.g. I-91] or West [Burlington Area]. When leaving the
Exit you will head North toward Stowe.
Proceed North until you begin entering the
Village of Stowe. Just before entering the village you will see the
Intersection of Route 108 on your left. Go
left on Route 108 and you'll soon be climbing Vermont's Highest
Mountain, Mt. Mansfield [Elevation 4393']. There are numerous lodging
establishments along this road. Soon, you will see the entrance to
the Stowe Mt. Mansfield Base Lodge Area on your left. There are a number
of Summer & Fall Activies available through October 15th, including
the Gondola
Skyride, Alpine Slide, and Mt. Mansfield Toll Road.
Next... Continue up Mt. Mansfield on Route
108. This road become one-step removed from being a paved trail you can
drive on. Not to worry!!! After you maneuver around some
larger-than-your-vehicle boulders [on paved road] you'll see a large
pull-off parking area. Great place for a tailgate lunch or just a
walk-around. The kids will love it - just make sure to keep them off the
road, and keep them in sight if they start climbing rocks! Note:
The historic Smugglers' Notch Pass, on
Route 108 between Stowe and Jeffersonville, is closed in the Winter and
closed year around to motorcoaches, motorhomes and commercial vehicles.
Next,
continue on Route
108 through Smugglers' Notch Pass till you come upon Smugglers's
Notch Resort,
another worthwhile stop. Smugglers’ is nestled amid some of the most
breathtaking, mountain scenery in Vermont.
Continue on Route
108 to Jeffersonville and turn Right on to Route 15 to Johnson Vermont,
the home of Johnson State College and Johnson Woolen Mills which dates
back to 1842. The clothing company still makes the same woolen shirts,
jackets and the famous iceman's pants that have been best sellers for
decades and still operates a Factory Store here.
Time to head for
Morrisvile and Route 100. Go South on Route 100 to the Village of Stowe
[End of Loop Drive]. This is a must-stop... A charming mountain village
full of shops and galleries... and a major destination year-round. It is
of course legendary as a home to winter enthusiasts and the famed Trapp
Family Lodge.
To head home...
continue on Route 100 South to I-89. Again, there's lots of interest
on the way. Incidentally, Waterbury is a stone's throw from the
entrance to I-89... just continue on Route 100 into town.
